Play up! Play up! And play the game!

VITAI LAMPADA
("They Pass On The Torch of Life")
There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night --
Ten to make and the match to win --
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat,
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his Captain's hand on his shoulder smote --
'Play up! play up! and play the game!'
The sand of the desert is sodden red, --
Red with the wreck of a square that broke; --
The Gatling's jammed and the Colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks:
'Play up! play up! and play the game!'
This is the word that year by year,
While in her place the School is set,
Every one of her sons must hear,
And none that hears it dare forget.
This they all with a joyful mind
Bear through life like a torch in flame,
And falling fling to the host behind --
'Play up! play up! and play the game!'
Sir Henry Newbolt (1862-1938)

Odd interesting and rare facts

From today onward i will be blogging about some rare , old , new , interesting facts (Mainly from what i read to what i here and what i study ) This is mainly for gratification of my quizzing mentality and so here we go :

  1. Colgate's first toothpaste came in a jar.
  2. Clans of long ago that wanted to get rid of their unwanted people without killing them used to burn their houses  down - hence the expression "to get fired."
  3. The creator of the NIKE Swoosh symbol was paid only $35 for the design. Bill Bowerman, founder of the shoe company Nike, got his first shoe idea after staring at a waffle iron. This gave him   the idea of using squared spikes to make the shoes lighter.
  4. Sahib , Sindh & Sultan were the names of first 3 locomotives of The Indian Railways that went from Bombay to Thane in 1853 .
  5. The first charity Christmas card was sent in 1949, it was designed by 7 year old Jitka Samkova of Rudolfo, Czechoslovakia. Her village received UNICEF emergency assistance in the form of food and medicine following World War II.In gratitude to the organization, Jitka painted a picture of the sun shining on a group of children dancing around a maypole. She used a sheet of glass to work on as there was no paper available. The scene, she explained means joy going round and round. Her teacher entered the painting for a UNICEF competition and winning the first prize and was made into UNICEF's first Christmas card.

  6. The Indian Railways were initially established to solve the supply side problem of cotton to be fed to Textile Industries in Manchester . Initially all the cotton was sourced from plantations in USA but because of the imminent war & water crisis , the cost of the cotton increased considerably . As a result textile industrialists from England sent Er. Graham Clark to survey the areas in which railway lines can be laid and cheap cotton can be sourced from India .
  7. The word "Bluetooth" is an anglicised version of the Scandinavian Blåtand/Blåtann, the epithet of the tenth-century king Harald I of Denmark and parts of Norwaywho united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The implication is that Bluetooth does the same with communications protocols, uniting them into one universal standard.[4][5][6]
The Bluetooth logo is a bind rune merging the Younger Futhark runes Runic letter ior.svg (Hagall) (ᚼ) and Runic letter berkanan.svg (Bjarkan) (ᛒ), Harald's initials.

I'm top of the world looking down at creation

These are lyrics of one of my favorite songs by The Carpenters

Such a feelin's comin' over me
There is wonder in 'most ev'ry thing I see
Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes
And I won't be surprised if it's a dream

Everything I want the world to be
Is now comin' true especially for me
And the reason is clear, it's because you are here
You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

Somethin' in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me

There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are here

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

QUICK BYTE

The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is people with no decision making ability what so ever ( like me ) to make six decisions at one time , just to buy one cup of coffee. light - dark -short - caffe - decaffe - low fat - non fat et al.

CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF

It is often said that just before you die, there is a moment when your whole life flashes in front of you. If that’s true I wonder what that would be for me. Would they be dreams that fill my heart or memories that are rosy sweet or they be some missed opportunities. But getting an answer to that wouldn’t be easy.
Let’s try to answer it the other way by answering the broader question attached to it. What makes you tick!! What is that that breathes life into you that makes you long for the next moment? More importantly makes you a human. Try answering that because I am too depressed, self deprecating to answer that.
But my logical mind says there has to be something. These must be something. That what I hate about my logical voice, it starts to extract the meaning about anything to everything only for the sake of it .Well it’s a little egoistic, can’t help. Maybe it’s stopping me to get there. Wait let me put it aside so beware next few lines may be absurd but be sure they would be beautiful  love songs because they are straight from the heart. So let’s hear from its humming.
Heart ,”Hey dude don’t you just love watching the rain in night. I have noticed you being lost because you like its melancholy sound, you like the sweet sound the drops make. You like was when Mother was awake for the whole night because the next morning you had an exam (those moments came too often) . You like them because she makes you feel special. Or when you won your first competition (maybe you came third) but your dad told you that he was proud of you. And don’t you just like when you watch the underdog movie just because you love winning from behind. You were happy all those times. You love when something makes you say wow .Or when you drop the tiniest of tear when you meet your best friend because you don’t want him noticing it  .And when some of your dearest friend says you write good dude J“.
Those things made me happy because they made me feel invincible, full of hope like the world is my oyster .I am destined to do great things (Copied from Dead Poets Society). That what makes me ticks. Looking into future, seeing an eye to eye saying c’mon I am worth something. I am not just an ordinary guy that you walk past by.
Maybe there has to be no reason to be happy. You are happy when you aspire less, feel more .Feel from within rather. That is what, what makes you human. Being human is just to feel things because someday you would be fertilizing daffodils. Maybe the flash would say, son you got embroiled in pity things just to prove a point to somebody but you lost the plot altogether. You could have done more. You could be more. You should have had done more for all you had got.
Makes your life extraordinary – Carpe Diem

What do u say ?

Theist to Atheist  : Do you believe in God ?
Atheist : I used to believe but then i thought maybe God has some issues , something like lack of confidence , that's why he doesn't come out in open . That made me not to believe him .

Ganges : The river of faith

The Ganges - Holy Ganga

It is ironic that most civilizations have thrived on the banks of river . The Ganges or sacred Ganga plain is home to a quarter of Indian population . From the place of its origin high in Himalayas to it finally depositing in the Bay of Bengal the river is prayed , adored and worshiped all along its length . The picture above is from the place called Rishikesh , Uttrakhand India . The color of water has a sandy look to it . But the river with its freezing water is a relief to a much traveled Hindu who comes from far off to have a plunge of faith in the holiest river . It is in Hindu folklore that the Ganges has the power to redeem one of its sin .

I have been sitting on the bank of river Ganga the time i took this pic for half an hour with my parents who are thoroughly enjoying the experience . My mind as it most of time does , starts to wonder was these the same banks that  my grandfather used to take dips in the holy Ganga 70 years ago and his grandfather did  140 years ago . This human chain of  faith has continued for over 1000 years and if one can make a quick calculation that is just 20 generations ago . I feeling of nostalgia grips me and make me realize that faith maybe a fancy word for some , but for others it is a feeling that helps overcome the unknown . It is then when you realize maybe to have faith in something indeed gives you a belief to survive .

Don't angry me !!

Well Rowdy Rathore i have heard is an overwhelming success , garnering cool 50 Cr in 3 days . But the movie war cry tagline 'Don't Angry me' just makes me uneasy for the simple reason that grammatically it does not make any sense . See Angry  is an adjective like Angry Birds and me of course is a pronoun and the subject in this case . So we have got a noun and an adjective . A sentence is incomplete without a verb . Don't doesn't qualify for a verb . So it all adds up to non sense .

Get the Mamta off your back

With all the political wranglings taking place in New Delhi regarding the choice of nominal position (President) who ironically sits at the helm of Indian constitution , the M&M (Mamta & Mulayam) alliance couldn't have found a better stage to show off their importance on a national stage . The congress has never been in its history dragged from pillar to post or embarrassed to such an extent that one of her ally names  the country's current PM for a President post . The congress would clearly be thinking to get the monkey off her back or i dare say to get the Mamta off her back .
